Friday 5th June

Literacy

Watch the story of ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’ by Eric Carle on you tube or read the book if you have it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=75NQK-Sm1YY

Can you draw 4 pictures from the story? – the egg on a leaf, a tiny caterpillar, a big fat caterpillar and finally the butterfly. Can you use your pictures to retell the story of the hungry caterpillar?

Maths

Practice your counting and addition skills to 20 by playing a game on the Busy things website:

Busythings.co.uk - Reception – Counting - Islands-How Many?

Other activity

Butterfly printing. All you need is paint and some paper. Simply splodge paint on one half of your paper and fold it in half so the paint spreads on both sides. Carefully open it up to reveal a beautiful butterfly.

It's a great way to teach children about butterflies and how their wings are symmetrical.

Once dry, your butterfly will make a cheerful decoration for your home. Or you could even turn it into a card and send it to somebody you haven’t seen for a while.

Thursday 4th June

Literacy

Play the Yes or No game. Ask a grown up to write these questions down on strips of paper. (in lower case letters)

  • Can a clock get cross?
  • Can crabs clap hands?
  • Are you fond of plums?
  • Did a shark ever jump up a tree?
  • Can frogs swim in ponds?
  • You can write yes and no on strips of paper.
  • Can you read each sentence? Choose yes or no to answer the question.

Extension: Pick any 2 sentences, write them out and write yes or no next to them.

Maths – ‘Snail and the Whale’ - Odd and Even Numbers

Have a go at the following activities and ideas that are based around the book ‘The Snail and the Whale’

White Rose Activities Day 4 – The Snail and the Whale

Other activity

Practice your cutting skills. Ask a grown up to draw some lines on a piece of A4 paper – straight, wiggly, zig-zag, dotted, dashed etc. Can you carefully use some scissors to cut up the lines?

Extension. Draw some simple shapes on paper and cut around them. Or cut out some interesting pictures from magazines.

WEDNESDAY 3rd June

Literacy

Look at the website:

https://www.onceuponapicture.co.uk/the-collections/the-inference-collection/

Scroll down to find ‘Something familiar’.

Talk about the picture with your grown up and answer these questions: (No need to write anything down)

  • Why is the black cat the only cat looking at the witch?
  • Why did the witch come here? Was she just passing, or did she come to the shop for a reason?
  • What is the ‘something familiar’? Why?
  • Do the witch and the cat already know each other?
  • How many cats do you see?
  • What do you think the cats are called?
  • Which cat would you choose and why?

Maths – Odd and Even Numbers

Watch the Numberblocks clip on odd and even numbers by following this link:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0wzyD3qrWUc

Talk about the idea that an even number can be shared equally into 2.

Explore whether different numbers (to 10) are odd or even by having a go at the following activities:

Give your child a number of biscuits or raisins (or something similar).

Count the biscuits and then share the biscuits equally between two.

If you can the number is even but if you can’t the number is odd.

Give your child a number of socks (for example: 7). Ask them if they have an odd number of socks or an even number of socks. If they don't know, get them to put the socks into pairs.

If there is one odd one left over, they know that the number of socks was odd.

Other activity

Draw a self-portrait. Look in the mirror and have a good look at yourself. Can you draw or paint a picture of yourself? Does it look like you?

TUESDAY 2nd June

Recap all the new Phase 4 tricky words. Watch this clip to learn a tricky word song:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3NOzgR1ANc4

Can you have a go at writing down each word? Now pick at least 4 and write a sentence including those words.

Maths – ‘Snail and the Whale’ Addition Problems

Have a go at the following activities and ideas that are based around the book ‘The Snail and the Whale’

White Rose Activities Day 2 – The Snail and the Whale

Other activity

Printing. If you have any paints at home, then have a go at printing a picture. You could use a variety of different household objects to dip into the paint – playdough, corks, egg cups, spoons, lego/duplo, forks, sponges, etc. Enjoy!

MONDAY 1st June

Literacy

Have a go at writing an independent sentence about something you have done or experienced during half term. Think about what you know about how to write a sentence. It needs a capital letter to start, finger spaces between each word and a full stop at the end. Use your phoneme mats or phase 3 booklets to help you and try to write tricky words using the correct spellings. (e.g I went to the beach with my family. I had a picnic in the park. We went to the woods.)

Maths – Exploring snail spirals and patterns in nature.

Read the ‘Snail and the Whale’ by Julia Donaldson. You can watch it on the BBCiplayer by following this link:
