Friday 22nd May

Literacy

Can you think about everything a plant needs in order to grow? Now write one or more sentences to share your knowledge. E.g Plants need water and the sun to grow. Plants will die without water.

Don’t forget that every sentence starts with a capital letter, has finger spaces to separate words and needs a full stop at the end. Be confident to sound out the words using the phonemes that you know.

Extension: Can you read your sentence aloud to a grown up?

Maths – 4 Seasons

Watch this seasons clip on you tube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VYpGBtR8Lbs

Talk about it with a grown up and see if you can identify the 4 seasons of Winter, Spring, Summer and Autumn. What changes happen during each season? Which season are we in now? Which is your favourite season and why?

Extension: Log onto ‘Busy things’ and order the 4 seasons.

Go to Reception > Understanding the World > The World > Plants > Ordering Seasons

Other Activity

Bird spotting. While you are the garden or out on a walk, see how many different birds you can spot. What do they look like? What sound do they make? Have you seen this bird before? Do you know the name of it? These websites will help you identify some different birds.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/cbeebies/joinin/garden-bird spotting

https://www.theschoolrun.com/how-make-your-garden-bird-friendly

Extension: Make a note of what you see over the weekend and list all the different birds.

Thursday 21st May

Literacy

Think about the new phase 4 tricky words that we have learnt so far – said, so, have, like, do, some, come, were, little, there, one and when

Have a go at writing each word on a piece of paper.

Turn them over, mix them up and turn one over.

What does it say? Can you think of a sentence with that word in.? How many can you read without help?

Maths – Doubling

As we know spiders have 8 legs, 4 on each side.

Can you sort spiders into doubles and not doubles?

Some of our spiders have been losing their legs!

Open the activity sheet and tell us the amount of legs and the double they are.

White Rose - Spider Legs Doubling Activity

Other Activity

The author and artist Eric Carle (The Tiny Seed, The Hungry Caterpillar, Bad-Tempered Ladybird etc) created his illustrations by painting and then creating collages.

Why don’t you have a go at creating a picture in the style of Eric Carle?

You need to paint several sheets of paper with a different colour. (one blue, one green, one yellow etc) You could change the texture of the paint by using household tools (fork, cork, scrunched up tin foil etc) to scratch patterns or shapes into it (while wet). When the sheets have dried cut them up into different shapes and arrange to create a picture. This you tube clip might give you some inspiration:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2XcVmNt-vEw

You might choose to do a flower, insect or an animal or anything you like. We would love to see what you come up with! Enjoy

Wednesday 20th May

Literacy

Look at the picture on Tapestry ‘Magic carpet’.

You can also access it through the website:

https://www.onceuponapicture.co.uk/the-collections/the-inference-collection/

Scroll down to find ‘Magic Carpet’.

Talk about the picture with your grown up and answer these questions: (No need to write anything down)

  • What is happening here?
  • Why/how is the carpet floating?
  • How is the boy feeling? Was he expecting this to happen?
  • How is the dog feeling? How do you know?
  • Does this bedroom belong to the boy? What does the setting tell you about his character?

Maths – Introducing doubles

Watch the following episode (series 2 - Double Trouble) to see how the Numberblocks 1, 2 and 4 double up to make their respective doubles 2, 4 and 8.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b08q4jkq/numberblocks-series-2-double-trouble

Activity - Exploring doubles using a mirror.

You will need:

A selection of counters or simply use what you have to hand such as gems, pom poms, mini dinosaurs or lego bricks.

1.Place one object in front of the mirror.

  1. Add how many counters can be seen altogether including in the reflection of the mirror.

Write the answer down

i.e. 1 + 1 = 2 double 1 = 2

  1. Place two objects in front of the mirror and repeat the process.
  2. Continue with the activity using up to 5 objects.

Other Activity

Divide a piece of paper into 4 equal boxes. Can you write the names of the 4 seasons in each? Now draw some pictures that represent each season.

Tuesday 19th May

Literacy

Today we are going to look at some more NEW Phase 4 tricky words.

Ask and adult to write down the words there, little, one and when on a piece of paper in lower case letters.

Look at the words and try to read them.

If you sound talk them, they will not make sense which is why we need to learn them on their own. Practice reading each word and then ask an adult to turn them over. Mix the words up and turn one over. Try and read what the word is.

Can you use each word verbally in a sentence? Now have a go at writing each word down and reading them again.

Ask a grown up to stick the Phase 4 tricky words we have learnt so far on pieces of paper/post it notes around the house. Every time you see one, say it out loud.

Maths – Pattern - Making Webs

Webs are very complex patterns. Have a go at being a very busy spider! How will you make yours?

Let’s look closely how the spider does it! Can you have a go at drawing your own web?

Follow the steps below

How to Build a Spider Web

Other Activity

Think about what you know about how plants grow. Then watch this clip on YouTube

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=89QRrnnYPNw

(How do plants grow – What Knowsy Nina wants to know)

If you haven’t already done some seed planting, why don’t you have a go now? You could start with sunflower seeds. What do you need to grow a seed? Watch your seed very carefully over the next few weeks and talk about any changes. Look after your seed and take some photos so we can see the changes too.

MONDAY 18th May

Literacy

Listen to the story The Tiny Seed by Eric Carle. You can access it on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I_A_e6h-DhU

Or listen to Mrs Fuller read it on Tapestry.

Talk about the story with a grown up.

  • Which part do you like best?
  • Why did some of the seeds not grow?

At the end of the story, a tiny seed sails away from the flower in the wind – What do you think will happen next?

Extension: Draw a picture to show what you think will happen to the tiny seed.

Maths – Number stories

Listen to the story of The Very Busy Spider by Eric Carle by following this link:

Have a go at the following activities and ideas that are based around the book ‘The Very Busy Spider’.

Other Activity

Webs everywhere! Unleash your inner Spiderman by making your own web. You could use tape or string to make it a 3-D web. How will you connect it? How will you have to move to design your web? Can you go under, over and through? How long did it take you?
