English activity

Today you will be writing in role, becoming the character in Something Fishy and writing about what happened. Use your story map to remember what happened. Start with the character sitting in the launderette, noticing something and then entering the machine. You can add your setting description as the character swims in. Here is an example of how your story could start:

I went to the launderette to do my washing because it was Wednesday. Wednesday was washing day. I was tired as it was late. Suddenly, I noticed something strange inside the washing machine. It was a fish! Was I dreaming? It can’t be a fish, surely it was just a sock…

Slowly, I got out of my seat and went to have a closer look. Shocked, I saw it again. My sock had transformed into a fish and there were schools of them! Did I own that many socks?

After that, I opened the door. Carefully, I reached out and touched the bubble of water leading to the underwater world. Then, I took a deep breath and put my head inside. I swam through a dark, narrow tunnel and that’s when I saw it…

Today you are going to write a setting description for the story Something Fishy, using your senses and including the expanded noun phrases and effective verbs you wrote yesterday. Here is an example of a description:

Tall, strong seaweed towers grow towards the light, standing still and stoic in the strong current. Shoals of stripy, colourful sock fish dart up and down. Bright rays of sunshine dance and sparkle in the water. A large t-shirt octopus with long tentacles drifts by. The glittering seabed stretches as far as the eye can see. Small, woolly hat turtles swim past slowly. Bubbles travel to the surface before bursting…POP!

Have a go at writing your own description in your jotter.

Art activity

Texture walk. Explore textures in your garden or nearby outdoor space by doing some rubbings with a crayon and thin paper or use tin foil. Bark, leaves and pavements work well. Back home you could create a texture collage or a leaf pattern.

English activity

Think about the story Something Fishy. You want to watch it again to remind yourself. https://www.literacyshed.com/something-fishy.html

Today you are going to be working towards writing a setting description of the underwater world inside the washing machine by gathering vocabulary and phrases. We’ll try one together thinking about the seaweed.

First, we must think about what it is made from.

Can you think of an adjective to describe it?

Can you come up with an expanded noun phrase to describe it? e.g. Tall, metal seaweed made from tokens.

Now it’s your turn. Try to write descriptions for these words in your jotter:

Geography activity - Map Your Patch.

Draw a map of your local area; you could look at Google Maps to help.

Mark on it important natural features e.g. trees, wildflowers (sometimes called weeds) and gardens. You may like to identify different trees and use a key to distinguish between them.
