Science activity - Marvellous Moths

Most moths come out at night. There are two easy ways of attracting moths into your garden after dark. If you get up early, there’s a good chance they will still be there in the morning.

  1. Hang a white sheet on a washing line. Hold or suspend a powerful torch behind it. The moths will be attracted to this light
  2. Get a grown up to some sugar and water/fruit juice and heat until the sugar dissolves. Soak some strips of old cloth in it and hang in a tree. Moths love drinking this sticky treat. More about moth trapping here:

Think about your prediction, was your idea anything like what Sully was worrying about?

  • Write down what you think the characters are thinking at the beginning of the race. Use the text to help you with your ideas. You could draw each character in your jotter and use a thought bubble to write what they are thinking.
  • Write down what you think will happen in the rest of the story. What would you advise Sully to do?

Music activity - Wild Rattles

Create your own natural percussion instrument using a Y shaped stick, an elastic band and some natural objects.

This example has used slipper limpets from the beach (they are often found with holes in).

You may have other ideas what would make a good rattling sound.

English activity

Read the beginning of the rhyming story Sully the Seahorse again.

Read the questions below and write the answers, using a complete sentence, in your jotters.

  • Why did the author call the tides ‘shimmering’?
  • Why do you think Sully wanted to hide? How do you know?
  • What do you think is going to happen that day?

Extension choice – What does the word excitement mean? When are you full of excitement? Explain a time to show when you were excited. Think of a character from a book that you have read that has been excited and explain what made them excited and what they said or did to show this.
