English activity

Think about the story from yesterday – The Pirate Cruncher.

Can you create character profiles for each of the pirates?

What do you know about each pirate from their words/actions in the story?

You could draw a picture for each pirate in your jotter and write their character profiles alongside them.

Maths activity - Measures: Measuring in centimetres

Remind yourself how to measure length using a ruler by playing this game:

https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/measuring-in-cm

If you have a ruler at home, can you find three things that are:

  • Less than 10 centimetres (<10cm)
  • Longer than 10centimetres (>10cm) - but no longer than 20cm

Draw and label them in your jotter. Use the <  > signs.

Book >10cm iPhone <10cm

Art activity

Sketch a sea creature.  Think carefully about the details of the creature you are sketching. Perhaps look at some images to help with what your creature looks like.  You could write some information about the sea creature that you have sketched.

English activity

Watch The Pirate Cruncher by Jonny Duddle here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ro5S_UdvWkI  BUT stop at this point 5:43.

Can you write a prediction about what you think might happen next?  Try not to peep at the rest of the video – we really want you to use your imagination to make up a pirate adventure that could happen at this point in the story.

When you have written your prediction you can watch the rest of the story. Which ending did you prefer, yours or Jonny Duddle’s?

Maths activity - Measures: Telling the Time

In class we have learned to tell the time using o’clock, half past, quarter past and quarter to.  We found this quite tricky!

See if you can complete level one of Hickory Dickory Clock – keep practising!

http://www.ictgames.com/mobilePage/hickoryDickory/index.html

Flamingo – if you are confident at Level One you could ask an adult to work through Level Two with you.

History activity - Pirate research

Continue your pirate research! Take a look at the following website and read the sections about The Treasures of the east and How Pirates were punished.

https://www.dkfindout.com/uk/history/pirates/

What have you learnt about the seas and channels of China and South East Asia? What did Pirates use to do and why?

English activity

Message in a bottle. Read the information below:

Can you write a reply to Tom as you instead of Sophie? Think about the information he gave you and reply with the same information about yourself, for example:

How old you are.

Who is in your family and where you live.

What interests you have or activities that you like to do.

Maths activity - Capacity

Your challenge today is to invent a new drink!

Your drink must be exactly 500ml. It must be made of liquids that are safe to drink.

Your ingredients must add up to 500ml. Write your recipe in your jotter.

For example, you could have:

  • 200ml orange juice
  • 100ml water
  • 200ml apple juice
  • (200ml+100ml+200ml =500ml)

Challenge: If you have a measuring jug at home, you and an adult at home could make the drink.

History activity - Pirate research

Continue your pirate research! Take a look at the following website and read the sections about The Spanish Main and Corsairs

https://www.dkfindout.com/uk/history/pirates/

What was ‘The Spanish Main’ and why did Pirates want to go there?

Tuesday 28/04/2020

English activity

Make a ‘Wanted’ poster about a pirate.  Draw a picture of your pirate and then explain what they are like and what they are wanted for. Think about the characteristics of pirates that you looked at last week. Is your pirate mean, fierce, a good swordfighter?  What could they have done to be wanted – have they stolen a ship, robbed some jewels or are they wanted because they did a good thing and you want to recognise that?

Have a look at this wanted poster for ideas

Maths activity - Measures

Have a go at Capacity countdown! – can you read the scales and make the rocket zoom?

http://www.ictgames.com/mobilePage/capacity/index.html

History activity - Pirate research

Continue your pirate research! Take a look at the following website and read the sections about Pirate women and The Jolly Roger.

https://www.dkfindout.com/uk/history/pirates/

What were the names of the two Pirate women that joined the crew of Jack Rackham? What other information have you learnt about them?

Monday 27/04/2020

English activity

Describe this setting. Try to include all of the details that someone else might miss!

  • Who lives here? Draw the character(s).
  • Why do you think this person lives here? What makes this house suitable for them?
  • Think of a character who definitely wouldn’t live here. Why wouldn’t they?
  • What kind of story could this setting belong in?
  • Would it be good at the beginning of a story?

Maths activity - Measures

Join in with this BBC Supermovers clip and learn about mass and capacity.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/teach/supermovers/ks1-maths-capacity-volume/zj8njhv

In maths, the term capacity is used when measuring how much liquid fits inside a container. It is measured in millilitres (ml) and litres (l).

With an adult, can you look around your home and find containers that have liquid in them. Can you find out the capacity of the containers (look carefully on the bottle for ml or l). For example, you might find milk, shampoo, juice or sauce.

In your jotter, draw 3 and label three containers that hold more than 100ml and three containers that hold less than 100 ml.

History activity - Pirate research

This week we are going to find out about the history of pirates. Take a look at the following website and read the sections about Pirate adventures and Captain Blackbeard.

https://www.dkfindout.com/uk/history/pirates/

In your jotters set up a page that will be used this week for your pirate research. You can title the page ‘Pirate Research’.

Today answer the following questions.

  • What was Captain Blackbeards real name?
  • How did Captain Blackbeard die?

Remember to use extended sentences and start your sentence with, ‘Captain Blackbeard’s...’
