English activity - Spelling

"Sticky words"

Can you try spelling some tricky words using sticks, grass or another material. You could try these tricky nature words – camouflage, pupae, nymph, species, chlorophyll.

Can you explain what they all mean?

This week let’s learn how to be historians! Click here to watch three BBC Bitesize videos.

Then have a go at the activity with the help of an adult or an older sibling.

Historical evidence around the home

A great way for children to learn about historical evidence is to use actual objects from around the house.

• Give children a range of objects from the past, it could be an old photo or a holiday souvenir.
• Together make a list of questions about your objects. How could you answer them?

Think about the skills that you have learnt in the video.

Thursday 14^th May

English activity - Inverted commas

Let’s learn how and when to use inverted commas!

When you are writing, inverted commas (also called speech marks) go before and after the words that a character speaks.

For example: "Why am I so hungry? I had breakfast!" complained the BFG.

Why am I so hungry? I had breakfast are the words that the BFG says out loud (also called direct speech), so the inverted commas go at the start and end of those words.  

Any punctuation goes inside the inverted commas at the end of what the character is saying.

Now watch these BBC Bitesize videos and try the activities. Video 1 Video 2 Activity 1 Write out these sentences in your jotters. Now add the inverted commas. (Click the image for the full version)

Art activity

Look at how these artists have used the view from their window as inspiration for their artwork.

"The World Beyond" by Pierre Bonnard

Look at some of David Hockney's digital works here: http://www.hockney.com/works/digital/ipad

Now find a view from a window where you live and spend some time looking carefully at the view.

Take time to notice as much as you can.

Either draw your view, with whatever you have at home, or use the paint/drawing tools on Purple Mash.

Either save it there or send a photograph in to office@coldean.brighton-hove.sch.uk

Music Activity

I loved hearing your ideas for Pop Stars last week, this week you are going to play with making a song for them. Make some music on 2Sequence that suits the description that you wrote, if they sing Pop music write Pop, or if they play Rock try Rock, then add some vocals.

This is a little tricky so I will talk you through it.

1 - Look for the box that say MySounds, at the bottom of 2Sequence.

2 - Click on the box with the + sign.

3 -Then press on the record box, which looks like a microphone.

4 - Press the red button here to record. If correct press done, if not try again.

5 - Then you get a microphone, add it to your song and hear yourself.

Have fun. I look forward to hearing them. If you press the green arrow on Purple Mash, you can hear me having a go at making a rock song. Great fun. ENJOY.

Computing Activity

This week I am hoping that you will complete the branching database that you started last week.

I have seen some wonderful ones for sorting animals so far.

Which groups of things will you sort? Book characters? Superheroes? Sports Teams?

English activity - Sentences

Watch these BBC Bitesize videos on writing sentences: Video 1. Video 2. Now put the correct punctuation in the boxes at the end of each sentence about giants. (Click the image for the full version) Top tips!  A full stop ends a simple sentence and a command: I like cake. Eat the cake. A question mark ends a question: Would you like a piece of cake? An exclamation mark ends a sentence that shows surprise or excitement: What a tasty cake! How yummy was that!

Well-being activity

We are going to move around and think about teamwork today. Click here to move around with the super movers.

Now complete the I am an amazing person activity. In this activity think about your strengths and how you could use them in a team. Finish the sentence starters in the balloons. Have a go at this spelling quiz /ay/ sound spelt ei, eigh or ey on Purple Mash.

Challenge: Can you think of any more words that fit this week’s spelling pattern? Now can you write some sentences using these spellings? E.g. There were eight days until his birthday.
