Wednesday 25th March

English activity

Today we will be creating compound sentences. We will join two main clauses together using coordinating conjunctions.

‘and’, ‘but’, ‘so’ and ‘or’ are the coordinating conjunctions that we have been using in Year 3. Here's a sheet to remind you.

"The strong, courageous gladiator stepped bravely into the Colosseum and the Emperor cheered excitedly."

Watch this video to help you on the BBC bitesize website and then play the game.

Now, read through this information on gladiators to help you when writing your own compound sentences into your jotter.

You could add interchangeable adjectives e.g. tall, towering oak tree or adverbs e.g. swiftly, gently that tell us how something was done to make the sentences more interesting.

Maths activity - Can I subtract HTO from HTO with one exchange?

In your jotter, choose a number from the second group and subtract it from a number in the first group. Use place value to set out the calculation correctly.

Now choose a different pair. Can you complete all 25 calculations?

Challenge: Which pair give the smallest difference? Which pair gives the greatest difference?

Geography activity

Record the weather at three different intervals throughout the day. You could observe the sky, measure the temperature and record your results in your jotter each time.

How does it change? Can you predict what the weather will be like tomorrow? Can you keep a weather diary for a week?

Challenge: Compare the weather in Brighton with somewhere else in the UK or with other countries in Europe using the Internet to help you.

Tuesday 24th March

English activity

Building on from yesterday’s English, today you will be including a subject noun, one verb and an object noun in your simple sentences. To help you with sentence structure, open the pdf file and complete the activities using your jotters.

You could add interchangeable adjectives or adverbs that tell us how something was done to make the sentences more interesting.

e.g. tall, towering oak tree

e.g. swiftly, gently

Maths activity - Can I add HTO + HTO together with one exchange?

In your jotter, choose a number from the first group and add it to a number from the second group. Use place value to set out the calculation correctly.

Now choose a different pair. Can you complete all 36 calculations?

Challenge: Which pair gives the highest total? Which pair gives the lowest total? Do any different pairs give the same total?

History activity - What did a Roman Gladiator typically wear?

In general, Gladiators in Ancient Rome did not wear much as it was considered a sign of masculinity to fight with a bare chest. It was only due to modesty that they wore a canvas loincloth, called a subligaculum, when they were in the heat of battle.

However, they also wore armour when they fought, with one Gladiator typically wearing a lot of armour and one not. This was because the Roman audience expected a fair fight!

They also wore a helmet and a sword for protection.

Use the attached pdf image of a gladiator and the labels to help you draw and label your own gladiator.
