COMPETITION FOR YEARS 4, 5 & 6

Are you in Year 4, 5 or 6? Then enter this competition for a chance to win a micro scooter or a goody bag.

Brighton and Hove City Council want children to create a design that will go on the the side of at least 150 of the light blue Bike-share Bikes that you see around town!

There is one design for Year 4s and 5s and a different part for Year 6s.

 

To enter the competition:

  • Click here for the Year 4 or 5 design template.
  • Print off the template sheet or you can create your design on a computer.
  • Create your design. It could show the benefits of cycling for physical or mental health, to improve air quality, reduce congestion or just a fun thing to do! It can also be linked to climate change and the opportunity for a better future.
  • Try to keep your design simple. Any words must be big and clear to read.
  • E-mail your design to transport.projects@brighton-hove.gov.uk by Monday 6th July. Please remember to include your child’s name, his/her class and the name of the school.
  • The winners and runner ups will be notified by email Friday 17th July.

Take a minute again to look at this picture. Remind yourself of the noun phrases you wrote yesterday.

I would like you to write a short story about this scene. Use the expanded noun phrases that you wrote yesterday. I don’t mind what your story is, so long as it is set here. If you are struggling for ideas, check out my examples below.

Maybe you have arrived at this house for a holiday what might you do while you are there?

Maybe you are lost in a jungle and built this house to live in, when will you get out to civilisation again?

What are the metal bars over the house? Maybe you are trapped here by someone and can’t get out. You could use my example story start if you want:

It has been 3 weeks now. No phones. No electricity. No way out. Out of the window, the boy can see the never-ending expanse of the forest. A huge, cold cage with transparent windows keeps him in. well not any more. Today is the day he gets out.

  • Think of 5 words or phrases to describe Sebastian Eels and how he treats other people.
  • How can the children possibly stop Sebastian, now that he knows the malamander’s weakness?

Topic – Personal, Social, Health, Economic and Citizenship Education

It is important to stay in touch with friends and family, particularly at times like these. Today your PSHCE task is to message or call a friend or family member who you haven’t spoken to in a while.

Make sure you ask them questions as well as telling them about yourself:

  • Ask how they are feeling.
  • Ask what they have been up to.
  • Ask what they are looking forward to.

We have another writing topic for us over the next two days.

Take a while to look at this picture. Think about these questions or discuss them with someone at home.

This house is in a Malaysian forest, is there anything special about this forest (look for evidence in the picture)?

  • Which continent is Malaysia in? What would the weather be like there?
  • If you were to stumble into the Malaysian rainforest, what plants and flowers might you come across? Name at least three examples with a description.
  • Malaysian rainforests support a vast diversity of plant and animal life. Name three creatures you might come across.
  • Who might live in a house like this? Explain your answer.
  • Living in this house in the rainforest would be very different to living in a house in a city. Give three examples of how it would be different.
  • If you lived in the Malaysian rainforest, what might a typical day be like for you and your family?

Today I would like you to write some expended noun phrases.

Choose a noun [tree]. Choose some adjectives to describe it [big, old tree]. Add extra detail after the noun [big, old tree with dark-green leaves] (try using with, who or by after the noun). It is then worth seeing if you can up level any of the vocabulary [huge, ancient tree with dark-green foliage]

Other examples:

[rock] – [hard, jagged rock] – [hard, jagged rock by the stream]

[house] – [strange, wooden house] – [strange, wooden house with a bamboo roof]

These are phrases (not sentences) so do not contain a verb. You can use them in sentences instead of just a noun.

The boy tripped over the rock. – The boy tripped over the hard, jagged rock by the stream.

Write at least 10 expanded noun phrases about things in this picture or things that you might find there.

Wednesday 10th June

Ancient Egyptian scarab beetles

Ancient Egyptians believed that scarab beetles represented one of their Gods, Ra (the sun God). They believed that he rolled out the sun across the sky every morning and represented the life cycle and renewal. They also had a god called Khepri who had a beetle’s head and human body who represented the sun. The scarab beetle is a member of the dung beetle who lays its eggs in a ball of dung (poo) and rolls the ball of dung around to follow the suns movements.

 

Use these websites to make some drawings of either dung or scarab beetles. Use a range of different lines.

Music activity

Today’s music is looking at a new music making program, Busy Beats.

The best way to learn about it is to play with it... but there are also help videos.  If you click on the "Launch Help Videos" button shown below, there will appear a menu, watch INTRODUCTION and PLAYING WITH TEXTURES to get you started and then have an experiment.

  • Can you change the tempo?
  • What happens if you move the ripplers?
  • What are in all the menus along the top?

Tuesday 9th June

English activity

Today, we will be writing our short story. Take a moment again to look at the photo.

I want you to imagine that you have just walked into the stadium (you can decide why your character is there). What do you see? Describe the stadium and remember what it was like before (use your work from yesterday). Maybe you are there to fix it after a natural disaster. Maybe you are going to build a new building there. Maybe no one lives in this town anymore so the stadium is not needed.

If you would like an idea to get you started you can use my opener:

This place had once been filled with noise, thousands upon thousands of excited fans cheering as they applauded ‘the beautiful game’ being played in front of them.

As I step through the tunnel and out onto the pitch, all I see is rubble. Huge, old cracks create a maze of disaster that crawls across the stadium…

  • Thank goodness Vi is still alive, she was lucky to have the book that was just the right thickness. Was it luck though or did the mermonkey know that that book would be the right thickness for this situation?
  • How did the book shop door open? Did the cat have something to do with the door or is there other magic afoot?
  • We are not sure who the people meeting Sebastian Eels were. Is it just a coincidence that Jenny is not in the shop at the moment or was she one of the people?

Topic – Science Skeletons

Inside the human body there is a skeleton.

What is the skeleton for? What does it do? Think about these 2 questions first.

A lot of animals have a skeleton inside their body – these animals are called vertebrates.

Some animals have a skeleton on the outside of their body – these animals have what is called an exoskeleton. These are examples of animals with exoskeletons.

The next two days are going to be a short writing project.

Here is a picture. Take a while to look at it. Think about these questions or discuss them with someone at home.

  • What does it show?
  • What has happened here?
  • What used to happen here?
  • What happens here now?
  • Why has it changed so much?
  • Will it ever be the same again?
  • Have you ever been to a stadium?
  • What did you see happening there?
  • Why are stadia like this built?

 

Tomorrow you are going to write a short story about what has happened here and why the stadium is deserted.

Today we are going to create some sentences and word banks to help you.

Can you write a short paragraph to describe the stadium as it used to look, and another to describe how it looks now?

  • What will Herbie do now that Vi has been killed?
  • Will he continue to try and find her parents?
  • Will he try and use the magic of the malamander egg?

We have discovered some magical things about Boathook Man this chapter.

  • What do you think the explanation is for him being able to turn into water vapour, how does this happen?
  • Do you think we will see Boathook Man again or is he no longer part of the story?

On page 199 the word incredulous is used.

What does this word mean and what word could be used instead?

You can look the word up in a dictionary or get the definition online (try ‘googling’ incredulous define).

 

Maths activity

Hold the phone!!! I have just discovered games on MyMaths!! Woo hoo.

With this in mind, I will start setting additional games to go alongside our learning. Most of the games have a theme specific to an area of maths, however they require you to use lots of your mathematical understanding to do well in them.

We will start off with a game that needs you to understand how to find the difference between positive and negative numbers.

If you can’t remember how to find the difference between positive and negative numbers check out this lesson.

It can be very helpful to visualise a scale when finding the difference between numbers.

See if you can remember the simple rule for finding the difference between a positive and a negative number.
