English - Writing Project

Today is the final day for writing your story. You should have written a couple of paragraphs now. Today you can finish off the story. You should have done most of the descriptive writing now and will be moving onto the action and events of the story. Try not to rush this part as people often end up jumping really quickly from event to event. Take your time and make sure you describe in detail what the characters are doing.

Bad example of problem and resolution:

The alarm went off. Wendy ran outside, there was gas and smoke everywhere. She floated over to the door. Once she turned it, there was gas and loads of noise. The others were shouting. Then there was bang, bang, bang. She looked but couldn’t see it.

The problem with this is that I do not describe what ‘it’ is. I refer to sounds like shouting and bangs without describing that they are or where they are coming from. The reader will be very confused reading this.

This is a better example:

There was a sudden alarm around the space station. A red light flashed on and off to accompany the ringing alarm. This was not good. Wendy rushed to get her space helmet on. She clicked the airtight clips and dashed towards the emergency hatch. Once she was there, she grabbed the handle of the door. It was heavy but eventually gave with a huge clang. The oxygen was sucked out into the vacuum of space as she clung to the door for dear life.

This example is better because I describe what is happening in more detail so you know what is clanging and how she is opening the door. It is important to note that it takes up more space to write in detail so don’t try to write about too many things. Just one problem and resolution will be fine.

You can write this in a word document and email in the finished piece to the office so we can share it with next week’s work or you can write in your work book.

Reading activity

Well then. We have finished the book; can you believe it?

I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did. Today’s task is to create a book review.

There is a template for you in Purple Mash. You have four days to finish the review.

Maths – Time and timetables

Today there is a lesson for you on mymaths.

After that, you will find a time and timetables task on Mymaths.

Give this mental maths game a go. You have to make the target 24 with the numbers given.

Topic – PSHE

Tomorrow more of the coronavirus restrictions are going to be removed, meaning that you will be able to get back to doing some of the things you enjoy. Today I want you to think about some of the good things in your life that you are looking forward to.

First, I need you to think about some of the things you haven’t been able to do recently that you normally enjoy doing. This will help you to think about what makes you happy. Some of the things you haven’t been able to do don’t matter that much where as others do.

Think of five things you haven’t been able to do and write them down in order from what you miss most to what doesn’t really matter that much.

My list looks a bit like this:

  • Not being able to see my family who live in Nottingham.
  • Not being able to meet up with my friends.
  • Not being able to go camping.
  • Not being able to go to the climbing centre.
  • Not being able to go to the shops.

Once you have your list of some things you haven’t been able to do, I want you to think of things you are looking forward to doing. You could write these on post-it notes and stick them to your wall, or into a note book. When deciding on things you are looking forward to doing, think about which things will make you happy not just things that you haven’t been able to do.

Think of 5 things you are looking forward to doing and write them down.

My 5 things are these.

  • Going up to Nottingham to see my family.
  • Going camping with my friends.
  • Having my parents down to stay with me in Brighton.
  • Meeting my friends for a barbecue.
  • Going for a big bike ride with my friends.

These are 5 things that I am looking forward to that will make me really happy. I can look forward to these if I am feeling down. It is important to think of things you will actually do because your mind can imagine them better.

It would be silly for me to look forward to being on the moon or riding a dinosaur because those things aren’t going to happen, they won’t help make me feel good. It is important to always look forward, particularly when things are hard and maybe you aren’t as happy as usual. If you are ever feeling down, it is a good idea to try and think of things that you are looking forward to and imagine yourself being happy while there.

The final thing you can do is talk to people at home about when you might be able to do some of these things.

If there is a date you can do some of these, write that date onto the post-it note.

Put the notes in order of when you are doing them. Maybe you can go to the park next weekend or maybe you will be able to meet your friends soon.

Thursday 2nd July

English – Writing Project

Today is the first day of writing. Because you are writing over 2 days, I expect your stores to be more complex and longer.

I would start today by writing the introduction to the story (introducing the main character and setting) and then introducing the problem.

Remember that you need to add a lot more detail to the writing in your plan. Don’t just put it together. Include description and detail as you go.

If you are going to give flamingo a go, try not to start with a simple description of the character, try to start with something happening and describe the character as you go. Look below at my example.

This is a boring example:

Wendy was a brave astronaut who wore a white space suit. She had long, blonde hair which flowed over her shoulders. She was stationed on the space station. The space station was shiny and floated hundreds of mils above the surface of the earth.

This is a better example:

As the shiny, white space station floated through the emptiness of space, a tear rolled down Wendy’s soft cheek. Wendy had longed to go home for months. She had been posted on the cold and lonely station for longer than she cared to remember. In space there is zero gravity so her long, blonde hair floated around her in a wild mess as she looked down at the planet she called home.

You can write this in a word document and email in the finished piece to the office so we can share it with next week’s work or you can write in your work book.

Reading activity

Read along with Mr Bulmer pg297, Chapter 41, Erwin’s Paw.

After reading the chapter, answer the questions below in your book or discuss them with someone at home.

  • Why do you think Erwin touched the mermonkey’s hat?
  • What sort of book do you think the children will get this time?
  • What adventure would you like the children to go on next?

Maths – Area of shapes

We are going to continue with revising important topics that we have covered this year. Today we will look at Area of shapes.

First, watch this video.

Follow the instructions on the video. It will ask you to stop at different points in time to complete tasks. Make sure you pause the video so that you have time to complete the activities.

Now that you have watched the video, give this work sheet a go. If you have a printer, you can print work off. If you do not have a printer, you can try your best at completing the answers in your workbook.

Once you have finished, you can check you have the correct answer with this answer sheet here

If you would like more practice, there is a task set for you on Mymaths. The task on Mymaths does not match up perfectly to the White Rose resources but will give you some additional or alternate practice. You have three days to complete work set on Mymaths before it is needed to be handed in.

Topic – World News

What do you think will be in today’s news? What stories do you expect to be reported?

Follow this link to watch today’s Newsround.

How did the stories reported on Newsround make you feel? Are they good or bad stories? If anything in the news worries you, make sure you talk to someone at home about them.

Today’s key question:

‘Ignorance is bliss’ what do you think this famous saying means? What does the word ignorance mean? Is there any truth in this saying?

Write a short paragraph or diary entry with your thoughts to the above question and quote. Do you think it is better, in some cases, to not know the whole truth if the truth is really sad or worrying?

Feel free to complete this in your jotter, a piece of paper, word or purple mash (I have not set a task for you but you can use one of the tools).

Remember you can watch Newsround any day of the week.

Wednesday 1st July

Art activity

I really enjoyed lots of your art from last week- gorgeous, thank you!

This week’s art learning is based on the work of an artist called Stik. He makes artwork that goes in public spaces, some of it is HUGE!

Have a look at some of his work and learn about him here:

http://stik.org

Have a go at drawing your own stick person character. Try out different lines and pens with whatever you have at home. This would also work really well on Purple Mash paint programme, using a thick brush or spray gun tool.

Think about a message that you’d like your stick person to share:

It could be one of kindness, thanks or celebration.

Explore different colours and backgrounds. Make loads and then choose your favourite. Send them in to the office and I will share them with Stik himself!

Music activity

Wow, I loved some of your musical words last week, Well done.

This week we are going to return to creating melodies with the synths.

So when you first open the 2do in Purple Mash, press on Launch Help Videos box below the pictures.

Watch the PLAYING WITH PITCH AND MELODY video, and then click on the cross and chose an empty beat.

Your challenge is to create a piece of music with some recorded melodies in it, as shown in the video. You must also have a drum beat and see if you can use some doors to create interesting rhythms.

If you need to re-watch the help video you find them in the top right corner of the screen, next to the red arrow.

Enjoy!

Tuesday 30th June

English - Writing Project

You should have decided on a character and a setting for your story. Today you are going to plan what is going to happen in your story.

You have all seen the 5-part story mountain: introduction (who, where), build up, problem, resolution and conclusion.

Click the image to get a PDF of the story mountain. I would like you to fill in this story mountain plan. You can fill it in on the computer, or create your own mountain in your work book.

I have created a couple of examples of story plans to for you to look at here:

Police story – I thought I could add a twist to this one. Maybe when the police officer runs after the thief they instead find a body. The man who said he was robbed was actually the robber. When the police officer goes back, he has got away.

Astronaut story – I thought I could put a twist on this one as well. Maybe the only way for Wendy to fix the rocket is to weld the door shut with her outside. She sacrifices her life to save the others. It could then end with a really sad scene as she watches the rocket leave with her floating in space. She would still be a hero but she would die in space.

If you would like to use one of my story ideas as a plan to build on, please do.

Reading activity

Read along with Mr Bulmer pg289, Chapter 40, Wendy. Click here for the audio recording of the chapter. After reading the chapter, answer the questions below in your book or discuss them with someone at home.

  • Why did Wendy have Violet on the beach all those years ago?
  • What was the confusion on the beach about when Violet was a baby? What happened?
  • Why did it take this long for Wendy to realise who Violet is?

Maths – Perimeter of rectilinear shapes

We are going to continue with revising important topics that we have covered this year. Today we will look at Perimeter of rectilinear shapes.

Once you have finished, you can check you have the correct answer with this answer sheet here. Link to answer sheet.

If you would like more practice, there is a task set for you on Mymaths. The task on Mymaths does not match up perfectly to the White Rose resources but will give you some additional or alternate practice. You have three days to complete work set on Mymaths before it is needed to be handed in.

History activity

Today I want you to compare two different, ancient civilisations. The Mayans and the Egyptians. You have already done a lot of work about the Egyptians and today you will learn a bit about the Mayans. Follow this link to BBC Bitesize Watch the videos and give the task a go.

Once you have done that I would like a short fact file that compares the Egyptians to the Mayans. There is a file for you in Purple Mash to do this on. An example of the comparisons you might make are these:

The Mayans and the Egyptians both built impressive stone structures that can still be seen today.

Both the Egyptians and the Mayans were known to have tattoos.

You have four days to complete this history task.

Monday 29th June

English – Writing Project

We are going to try something different this week. You are going to write a story this week but we are going to spend the whole week preparing for it and writing it.

  • Today you are going to choose a main character and setting then you are going to describe them.
  • Tomorrow you are going to write a plan for what will happen in your story.
  • You are then going to write your story on both Thursday and Friday.

Because we are spending more time writing this story, it will be longer and more complex.

The first task today is to choose a character and a setting. It could be a child, an old man, a firefighter, an astronaut or whoever you can think of. Try thinking of characters from books and tv shows that you like. Maybe you could take some ideas from one of them.

After that, you need to decide on a setting for your story. Choose a setting that would make sense for your character e.g. an astronaut might be on an alien world, a firefighter might be in a city, an explorer might be in a jungle (you probably wouldn’t get a firefighter at the north pole).

Once you have decided on a character and setting, I would like you to draw the character and the setting.

Then write adjectives around your drawing to describe the setting and the character.

Reading activity

Read along with Mr Bulmer pg283, Chapter 39, A Strange and Eerie Light. After reading the chapter, answer the questions below in your book or discuss them with someone at home.

  • What does the word rapture mean? Look it up in a dictionary, then write two sentences that uses the word correctly. Can you try and use the word today in a conversation with someone at home?
  • How did the Malamander come back to life?
  • If you were Violet, when she had the egg at the end, what would you have wished for and why?

Maths – Perimeter of a rectangle

We are going to continue with revising important topics that we have covered this year. Today we will look at Perimeter of a rectangle.

Geography – Rivers

Go to BBC Bitesize and watch the videos about rivers. Then give the two tasks a go.

We went on a trip this year, to a very well-known country park. While we did not visit the rivers while we were there (we were there to look in the fields and forests for evidence of animals and their habitats), they have a river system that shows some interesting river features very well.

If you would like an extra challenge, try to remember where this trip I’m describing was to.

  • What is the name of the river that is there?
  • What river features does this river demonstrate?

Do some research to answer these questions.
