English – Writing Project

Today I would like you to write your diary entry. Imagine that you are that scuba diver and discovered those ancient carvings that we saw yesterday.

You can use my opener if you’d like.

Dear Diary,

Today was my first dive. It took a long time to get all the equipment on. I couldn’t get my feet into my wet suit. I think I need more practice. The team I went with was amazing, they have been on loads of dives before but none quite like this one…

If you would like to write on PurpleMash, you will find a new task in your 2do list. You have 4 days until this purple mash needs to be handed in. Remember to upload your work to our Purple Mash display board or send in a picture of it into the office.

Reading

Read along with Mr Bulmer pg274, Chapter 38, Captain Kraken. Click here for the audio recording of the chapter. After reading the chapter, answer the questions below in your book or discuss them with someone at home.

  • Why did Sebastian turn the Boat Hook man into sea creatures?
  • What do you think Vi will try to do now?
  • How will the children escape the Leviathan?

Maths – dividing 3-digits by 1-digit

We are going to continue with revising important topics that we have covered this year. Today we will look at dividing 3-digits by 1-digit.

First, watch this video. Follow the instructions on the video. It will ask you to stop at different points in time to complete tasks. Make sure you pause the video so that you have time to complete the activities.

Now that you have watched the video, give this work sheet a go. If you have a printer, you can print work off. If you do not have a printer, you can try your best at completing the answers in your workbook. Link to work sheet here.

Once you have finished, you can check you have the correct answer with this answer sheet here. Link to answer sheet.

As it is the end of the week, there is also a maths game set for you on Mymaths.

Topic – Food

Earlier in the week, you will have cooked a meal - I hope it was tasty. Today I want you to think about the meal you cooked.

Have a chat with whoever ate it. What did they like about it? What could be improved? Maybe they thought it could have more cheese on, maybe they thought it was too salty or maybe they thought it could be spicier.

Go onto Purple mash, there is a meal review file for you to complete. The most interesting box is the what would you do differently box. You have 4 days until this purple mash needs to be handed in.

Thursday 25th June

English – Writing project

Look at this picture below and think about these questions:

  • What feelings do you think the divers are experiencing?
  • Where do you think the stone giants came from? Why do you think they are now at the bottom of the sea?
  • Do you think the divers should leave the stone giants where they are, or put them in a museum?

For the next two days you are going to be preparing and writing a diary. I want you to imagine that you are one of the divers and have found these underwater statues. You are going to write a diary entry detailing your thoughts and feelings as you found these under water.

The key features of writing a diary are these:

  • Write in first person.
  • Include your thoughts and feelings.
  • It will be mostly in the past tense.

If you would like to hear about some authors of diaries and do some more research on them, you can check out this BBC page.

Today, in preparation for writing your diary tomorrow, I would like you to list the feelings and thoughts you would have had when you were scuba diving. These notes can be just written as short sentences.

You will probably include some abstract nouns (nouns that can’t be touched or experienced with the senses). Examples of these are love, fear and hope. Can you find any others that you have used?

Reading

Read along with Mr Bulmer pg266, Chapter 37, A Window to the Past.

After reading the chapter, answer the questions below in your book or discuss them with someone at home.

  • Why did Vi’s parents get into the boat?
  • What do you think the people were doing in the scene with the trees?
  • What do you think happened to Vi’s parents after sailing the boat?

Topic - Food

Today I would like you to cook the meal you chose. I realise that you may still need some ingredients from the shop. If you do not have the ingredients needed, you can cook at a later time in the week.

Make sure an adult is with you when you are cooking to ensure that everything is being done safely.

It would be fantastic to have some photos of the food you have made at home. Send them into the office and we’ll get them up on the website.

Wednesday 24th June

Art activity

When we were together in class, we did a lot of work about mark making- either with pencils, pens, graphite or paint.

When we were together in class, we did a lot of work about mark making- either with pencils, pens, graphite or paint.

Here is an activity that builds on mark making and is really fun and experimental. It uses everyday things to ‘paint’ with. One example is coffee:

You can experiment with different strengths to get different ‘colours’. To paint with, look around the kitchen to see what you can find to make marks with.

Look at this short video to get you started:

https://youtu.be/VCabnkCg0Ac

When your work is dry, perhaps you could use it to collage another piece of work with.

Music activity

Here is another music challenge for you. Lots of you have been enjoying Busy Beats, which is great. Lots of you have been following instructions well and making some great music so today I have an exciting challenge for you.

We are going to make words with music!

As we spoke about in class, a looooooooong time ago, we use the first 8 letters of the alphabet to name the notes.

So, as it is the alphabet, we can create some musical words.

First write down some words that you can think of using just the letters A, B, C, D, E, F and G e.g. dad (Try and be creative, can you think of a word no-one else will?)

Now on Busy Beat (in Purple Mash) you are going to use your words as music.

Do you remember when we play more than one note at a time, we call it a chord, so here the three notes D A D above the ripplers are making a chord, as they play at the same time.

If you can’t find the letter you want displayed along the top, in the section called synth, click on any letter you have placed there, and you can change it by pressing on any of the keys, the letter name will change as try the different keys

When you have added your words you can add some drums, experiment, make the words play beautiful music. Can you alter the tempo and use the doors we learnt about last week.

This may be tricky, but don’t worry, experiment and have fun, we are just thinking about how to use and name the notes, about melody and chords.

Enjoy and have fun. I have loved hearing your work.

Mr Hornby

Tuesday 23rd June

English – Writing Project

Today, it is time to write. You should have chosen a piece of art to look at. Because you each have a different piece of art, your stories will be very different.

I don’t mind if your story is a fantasy/adventure story, a horror story or a love story. It can be anything.

After you have finished writing, it would be great if you could try to draw your own version of the piece of art you chose so that we can see what it is.

If you would like to write on PurpleMash, you will find a new task in your 2do list. You have 4 days until this purple mash needs to be handed in.

You can use my story starter if you’d like:

The gallery was boring. He didn’t even want to go in the first place. He had such grand ideas of what the day could have been; he had a wild imagination. Until he turned the last corner, every corridor was the same. But there, at the end of this corridor, was a picture. A different picture that seemed to be moving…

Reading

Read along with Mr Bulmer pg258, Chapter 36, The Belly of the Beast.

After reading the chapter, answer the questions below in your book or discuss them with someone at home.

  • Do you think it was Violet’s plan all along to get the egg?
  • What do you think Violet will do with the egg now?
  • What did Violet do to get rid of Sebastian, how was he tricked?

Maths – multiplying 3-digits by 1-digit

Topic – Food

You have researched what a healthy diet consist of and what to look out for on food labels. It is important to remember that not every meal has ingredients from all the food groups.

This week, I would like you to plan a meal, cook it and review what you have cooked.

Last week, you did a bit of cooking but this week I would like you to have a bit more ownership over it (sorry parents). First of all, you are going to have to plan the meal you are going to make.

Take a look at these websites, there are some recipe ideas here.

https://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/collection/quick

https://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/collection/easy

https://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/collection/quick-and-healthy

There might be recipe books at home you can have a look at too or maybe an adult knows some good recipes they can tell you.

Discuss the recipes with someone at home. Look at the ingredients needed for the recipe. Do you have the ingredients in the house already? What else would you need? Do you think that the recipe you have chosen is a healthy one?

Again, discuss the recipe with an adult at home to see what they think of it.

Today, I only need you to decide on the recipe you are going to cook. You might then need to make a list of ingredients you need. It is very important you discuss this week’s topic work with an adult at home so that they can help you with it.

Monday 22nd June

Reading activity

Read along with Mr Bulmer, Chapter 35, The Malamander's Lair.

After reading the chapter, answer the questions below in your book or discuss them with someone at home.

  • Think of 5 words to describe the gun turret the children were in.
  • What do you think will happen to the children next?
  • Which of the children is the most brave? Find details in the story that make you think that.

English activity - Writing Project

Today’s writing project is going to be a little different. The picture below gave me an idea. I thought, “What if this was a different painting, what other paintings could come to life?”

To start with today, I would like you to find a piece of art (this art could be a picture you have at home or it could be on the internet). I want you to imagine that whatever is in the picture has come to life.

  • What would you do if you were stood in front of it?
  • Would it be a good thing that it has come to life or would it be bad?
  • Is it a person? Can you talk to them?
  • Is it a historical piece of art or is it a fantasy, made-up piece of art?

Once you have a piece of art to look at, I would like you to create a short plan showing what will happen when the art comes to life.

The plan could be a comic strip, it could be a sentence for each paragraph, it could be notes: it does not matter so long as it makes sense to you.

Tomorrow, you will write a story about the you have chosen.

Maths - Ordering amounts of money

Today we are focussing on place value by thinking about values of money.

Click here to watch the video.

Then, complete this worksheet by either printing it and working on the sheet or by writing the answers in your maths books.

If the question requires you to draw part of the question, then do your best to draw the part you need to. If a question requires you to use equipment you don’t have, then you may leave that question.

Answers here.

If you would like more practice, there is a task set for you on Mymaths. We have done money before on Mymaths so you might have seen some of this before. It includes challenges and problems related to money that uses different skills. You have three days to complete work set on Mymaths before it is needed to be handed in.

Topic – Food

The labels on food products in the UK show how healthy the food is. Lots of labels now have a colour coded system: green, amber and red (green being the healthiest and red being the least healthy). The quick colour coded system tells you information like the amount of sugars, fat and salt. It tells you about these because they are the things that make foods unhealthy. ‘Saturates’ or ‘saturated fats’ are a type of fat that is worse than normal fats.

This is an example of a colour coded food label.

You can see that these burgers don’t have much sugar in. They do however have a medium amount of fat and salt. They have a lot of saturates in.

  • Do you think that these burgers are a healthy item or do you think they are unhealthy?
  • Do you find it surprising that they have some sugar in?

Ask an adult for permission to look at the ingredients and food in the house. Look to see how many foods have these labels on. A good place to look is on cereal boxes and ready meals. Why do you think a ready meal would have a colour coded label on but a bag of carrots wouldn’t?

  • Are the labels mostly green, amber or red?
  • Are you surprised by how much sugar is in savoury foods?

These labels are handy because you can quickly get a good idea of how healthy the food is.

Below is the advice about food labels from the NHS website.

In short, the more green on the label, the healthier the choice. If you buy a food that has all or mostly green on the label, you know straight away that it's a healthier choice.

Amber means neither high nor low, so you can eat foods with all or mostly amber on the label most of the time.

But any red on the label means the food is high in fat, saturated fat, salt or sugars, and these are the foods we should cut down on.

Try to eat these foods less often and in small amounts.

For each food with a colour coded label, I would like you to decide if it is a healthy product or an unhealthy one. Is it something you can eat all the time or is it something that should be more of a treat?
