English

Take another look at the picture from yesterday.

Today we will write the short story about this picture. I don’t mind what happens in your story however it would be great to see if you can write a sad story here. How do you think a sad story would be different to an action or adventure story?

One thing that is for sure is that in a sad story more of the writing is about the characters’ thoughts and feelings instead of what they are doing. An action story, on the other hand, has characters running from scene to scene having fights, getting lost and is mostly about what the characters are doing.

Remember to include your speech from yesterday.

If you would like, you can use my story starter:

The flowers gave him hope.

Sitting there in the frost-covered park, with snowflakes gently falling from the cold, October sky, he reflected upon the events of the past few days. Despite everything, he still had hope for the future.

Make sure you share your writing with the display board so that others can read it.

Reading

Read along with Mr Bulmer pg243, Chapter 34, Warship. Click here for the audio recording of the chapter. After reading the chapter, answer the questions below in your book or discuss them with someone at home.

-Why did the children climb onto the top deck of the boat?

-Are you surprised to find that The Boat Hook Man is not dead?

-Why does Herbie not want to go into the gun turret?

Maths – Pounds and pence

We are going to continue with revising important topics that we have covered this year. Today we will look at pounds and pence. First, watch this video. Follow the instructions on the video. It will ask you to stop at different points in time to complete tasks. Make sure you pause the video so that you have time to complete the activities. Video link.

Now that you have watched the video, give this work sheet a go. If you have a printer, you can print work off. If you do not have a printer, you can try your best at completing the answers in your workbook. Link to work sheet here.

Once you have finished, you can check you have the correct answer with this answer sheet here. Link to answer sheet.

To mark the weekend, here is a link to a game on Mymaths. It requires adding and probability, what is the highest score you can get?

Topic

Today for your topic work I would like you to be involved with the cooking at home. Whatever meal is being cooked for tonight’s dinner, I would like you to help with. Cooking is an important skill and there is no better way to learn than to get involved.

  • How many different times do you use maths when cooking?
  • Maybe you need to look at temperatures, weights or cooking times.
  • Does your microwave have buttons to input the time or does it have a dial?

Most meals require you to read some instructions as well. You might have to read a recipe from the internet or a book. You might have to read instructions on the back of a pizza box – it is important to follow the instructions carefully otherwise you might and up burning the food or having it under cooked.

It would be nice to see any photos of meals that you have cooked – send them in to the office@coldean.brighton-hove.sch.uk and we’ll get them up onto our learning for next week.

Thursday 18th June

English activity

Look at the picture and think about these questions or talk about them with someone at home.

  • Who is the man in the park?
  • What has happened to him?
  • What do you think he is hoping for?
  • What is significant about the flowers?
  • What colour is winter?
  • What colour is summer?
  • Is there more happiness or sadness in the world?

This story will be a sad/emotional story instead of an action or adventure story.

What do you think the differences between the two are?

The man might talk to himself about his thoughts while he is sat on the bench or he might talk to someone else about what he is feeling. Today I would like you to write some speech for the man. If you would like a recap on the features of direct speech, follow this link to the BBC.

Here is an example you can use to start yours if you want:

“What has happened?” the lady asked.

“It was all just too much,” the man replied as a tear rolled down his cheek.

Reading

Read along with Mr Bulmer pg326, Chapter 33, Will-O’-The-Sea-Wisp. Click here for the audio recording of the chapter. After reading the chapter, answer the questions below in your book or discuss them with someone at home.

-Why was Mrs Fossil out on the beach at night?

-Why was Mrs Fossil surprised to hear Violet’s full name ‘Violet Parma’?

-Mrs Fossil calls out hesitantly at one point. What does it mean to be hesitant? Check in a dictionary, you can use this online one.

Maths – Halves and quarters

We are going to continue with revising important topics that we have covered this year. Today we will look at halves and quarters. First, watch the video.

Topic – Food

Today, we are going to look at a healthy diet.

Our diet can be broken into 6 key different groups:

  • Beans, pulses, fish, eggs, meat and other proteins
  • Dairy
  • Fruits and vegetables
  • Potatoes, bread, rice, pasta and other carbohydrates
  • High fat, salt or sugar foods
  • Oils and spreads

First of all, which of these food groups do you think you should eat the most of? Which should you eat the least of?

Do you think your body should have some things from each group?

Can you think of examples of food from each group that you have eaten recently?

Your task today is to investigate what a healthy diet is. This website is for the NHS and shares lots of details about what food you should eat from each of the groups. This web site gives more information about how you can eat and be more healthy.

I would like you to note down 5 facts or ideas that you did not know before looking at these websites. This information might be useful next week…

Art activity

Take a look at this artists Lockdown art activities (Week 2 Ed Boxall)

https://www.cultureshift.org.uk/spacetocreate-online

The artist is Ed Boxall and he makes work based on imaginary characters that are a bit …. unusual!

Have a look here for details of some art activities that Ed is suggesting.

There are some other really lovely ideas for creative activities on this website

Another activity included there takes Dr Seuss characters and nonsense poems as its starting point, but you could come up with your own characters or adapt a favourite character from a book, film or even a sporting hero perhaps.

My latest sporting hero is Marcus Rashford.

Have fun! Ms Cullen

Music activity

Back to Busy Beats this week. I loved hearing your first attempts at using the program, so let’s get to know the program better.

So when you first open the 2do, press on Launch Help Videos box below the pictures.

Watch the two sections on Rhythm, Rhythm 1 and Rhythm 2. When you have watched them, click on the cross and chose an empty beat.

Create a beat that has

1) A tempo of 108 b.p.m.

2) Uses 2 doors.

See how interesting you can make your beat, play with the position of the ripplers, remember any feedback I gave you last week. Have fun add music or concentrate on the beat. Achievement awards will be given if you follow the numbered instructions above.

If you want to watch more help videos you find them in the top right corner of the screen, next to the red arrow.

Have fun! Mr Hornby

Tuesday 16th June

English activity

Today, you are going to write that short story about the image we looked at yesterday

Take another good look at it and make your decision about these key questions:

  • Who is the man?
  • Where is he going?
  • Where has he come from?
  • What will happen when he gets there?

I don’t mind what your answers are to these questions. It could be that these are magic doors that take the man to a secret castle where he has a huge bed and it is always night time so that he can get a good sleep. It could also be that he doesn’t know the doors are magical and he accidentally found them on his way back to bed.

Make sure you think about the verbs and adverbs that you are using.

You can use my story starter if you like:

Two mysterious portals had appeared in the twilight. The first door burst open and beams of light poured through, filling the countryside with a warm, amber glow.

Sleepily, a man stumbled over the cool grass in a dream-like trance. The Earth seemed to stand still. Everything seemed to have stopped. All he could hear was the distant rumble of thunder, and the constant drone of the television within.

He was now just a few steps away. What lay beyond the mysterious door ahead? What might that world be like?

Feel free to write this with a pen in your jotter (you can send a photo in for our gallery) or you can write into the document I have set up on Purple mash.

Make sure you share your writing with the display board so that others can read it.

Reading

Read along with Mr Bulmer pg232, Chapter 32, Dodgy Business.

After reading the chapter, answer the questions below in your book or discuss them with someone at home.

  • Why did Mr Mollusc change his tone with Herbie? Why did he start acting politely half way through the conversation?
  • How was Mr Mollusc feeling? Find some writing from the text that gives you clues to this answer.
  • Why did it seem like no time at all for night to arrive?

Maths – Round Decimals

We are going to continue with revising important topics that we have covered this year. Today we will look at rounding decimals. First, watch this video.

Follow the instructions on the video. It will ask you to stop at different points in time to complete tasks. Make sure you pause the video so that you have time to complete the activities.

There is also a Mymaths task relating to today’s topic. You can complete this in addition to the above or instead of. Follow this link to log into Mymaths.

PSHE - Combatting Racism

There has been lots of news recently about racism. There have been protests and demonstrations held in countries around the world. The people protesting are trying to make sure that everyone is treated fairly. These protests started after a black man in America was killed by a police officer.

I would like you to think for a minute about what racism is. Is racism different in different places – is it different in school than it is in town? Have you seen or heard anyone make racist comments? How do you think it would feel to have someone treat you differently?

Watch this Newsround video special on racism.

It is clearly unfair to treat people differently depending on the colour of their skin.

What do you hope for the future? Do you hope that people are treated fairly? Do you hope that people have equal rights?

Your final task is to create an origami heart.

Here is a video with instructions.

If you can’t get the video then there is also a picture of some instructions below.

(Click image for a larger version)

Once you have made the heart, I would like you to write on (or in) it what you hope the future will be like for people around the world. You can write sentences, words or phrases.

You might write:

Equality for all

Love

Kindness to others

... or an idea of your own

Monday 15th June

English - Writing project

Look at the picture and think about these questions or talk about them with someone at home.

  • Who is the man in the picture?
  • What do you think might be inside both rooms?
  • How did the lamp get there?
  • If the doors were portals into the future and the past, which door would you visit first and why?
  • Is there more of the past or the future?
  • Should we think more about the past or the future? Is it important to think of both? Explain your thoughts.

Our writing focus today is going to be with verbs and adverbs. I want you to think about how the man is moving.

Write a list of verbs which show how the man could be moving towards the door and what he might be doing e.g. looking, creeping, sliding. If you would like a recap of what a verb is, follow this link to the BBC website. Use a thesaurus to see if you can find more interesting words.

Here is a link to an online thesaurus.

Now, create a list of adverbs that could be used to add detail to how the man is doing these things e.g. quietly, stealthily, angrily. If you would like a recap on what an adverb is, follow this link to the BBC website.

Now, I would like you to write sentences telling me what the man is doing and how he is doing it.

The boy walked towards the door quietly.

Try using a fronted adverbial and including some description for the noun as well.

Silently, the young boy ambled towards the mysterious door.

Reading

Read along with Mr Bulmer pg225, Chapter 31, Peter Parma’s Magnum Opus.

Click here for the audio recording of the chapter. After reading the chapter, answer the questions below in your book or discuss them with someone at home.

  • What is a Magnum Opus, why is the chapter called ‘Peter Parma’s Magnum Opus’? Try googling ‘magnum opus’.
  • How will the children manage to stop Eels?
  • Why did Seegol give the children ‘the works’ to eat? What does it mean to have ‘the works’?

Maths – Order Decimals

We are going to continue with revising important topics that we have covered this year. Today we will look at ordering decimals. First, watch this video.

Follow the instructions on the video. It will ask you to stop at different points in time to complete tasks. Make sure you pause the video so that you have time to complete the activities.

Now that you have watched the video, give this work sheet a go. If you have a printer, you can print work off. If you do not have a printer, you can try your best at completing the answers in your workbook.

Once you have finished, you can check you have the correct answer with this answer sheet.

Topic – PSHCE

There have been lots of things happening in the world recently, some of it is very confusing: even the people in charge find it confusing so it is very hard for people to think about.

I would like you to watch Newsround today. Newsround is on every day and gives up to date news from around the world.

After watching this, I would like you to pick one of the topics discussed and write about it. You could write what you know about it, questions you have about it or anything else.

The reason I want you to write about it is that writing helps you to collect your thoughts, it helps you to build a picture of what is going on and to sort out your feelings (this is why a lot of people keep a diary).

Once you have finished, you can read over it, share it with someone at home or you can put it in a draw to never look at again – you could even throw it in the bin. The purpose of the writing is to think about your feelings.
