Year 4

FRIDAY 8th May

Today is May Bank Holiday. We have this holiday to celebrate May Day. It is an ancient festival of Spring and a current traditional spring holiday across Europe. Dances, singing, and cake are usually part of the festivities.

This year many people will be celebrating the anniversary of the ending of World War 2 in Europe. It ended 75 years ago today, on 8th May 1945.

Have a lovely weekend.

Wednesday 6th May

DON'T FORGET

Have you emailed in your question for Thomas Taylor, author of "Malamander". See Tuesday below for more details.

Art activity

You will have seen lots of rainbows used as symbols of thanks recently.

Other artists have used the symbol too. Look at these illustrations by Quentin Blake and see if you can think of other ways that a rainbow could be used.

You might want to draw this digitally on Purple Mash or colour or paint your designs.

Non-digital version can be photographed and emailed to the office office@coldean.brighton-hove.sch.uk. We will then choose some to send to the AMEX Stadium to display at their Testing Centre.

Music activity

On Purple Mash, check out your 2Dos and have a go at building a Popstar portrait.

Create an artist, a look, a band and then tell me all about them.

  • What kind of music do they play?
  • Are they famous?

Be creative, invent new musical styles. Or keep it simple and just base it on the music you like. Enjoy. I look forward to seeing your creations.

Computing activity

This week we are learning about the REPEAT function in  Logo.

Well done to all of you who had a go last week and saved their work in Purple Mash. Remember to save any of this week's work in the class folder (either Jade or Emerald) so I can find it easily.

Click here to access this week's lesson slides.

Have your Purple Mash login ready to try coding in Logo for yourself! (It's a good idea to open Purple Mash on a separate tab of you can.)

(Answers to this week's challenges are here.)

Ch16 The Malamander Egg 1.mp3

Discuss these questions with someone at home if you are reading with them or alternatively write them into your jotter.

  • Why do you think Sebastian Eels wants Violet’s father’s book so badly?
  • What do you think Sebastian Eels is hoping to find out from the book?
  • How do you think Sebastian Eels know the boathook man?

As we won't be able to visit The Dome for our Young City Reads event, Thomas Taylor (The author of Malamander) has asked that you email in some questions for him to answer.
He will send us a link to a video chat with him on May 21st where he will answer his favourite questions. Have a think about any questions you have for him.
They could be about the book and its characters, for example:
  • How did you come up with the idea for Malamander?
  • Is Eerie on Sea based on a real life place?
Or you could ask him about himself and being an author, for example:
  • How old were you when you first started writing stories?
  • How long did it take you to write Malamander?
Once you have thought of your own question email it in to office@coldean.brighton-hove.sch.uk with your name and class.
Miss Clifford and Mr Bulmer will forward them to Thomas Taylor and hopefully some of Coldean's will be chosen,
Remember to include your name in the email so we know who has asked which questions.
