English

Watch this video about pronouns to remind yourself https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zwwp8mn/articles/z37xrwx then have a go at your 2do set on Purple Mash looking at pronouns and proper nouns. If you are unsure, there is a practise quiz underneath the bitesize quiz.

Reading

Today you should read your favourite book to someone at home, if everybody is busy with their own work have a go at reading it aloud to yourself in the mirror or maybe to a pet. Have a look on Youtube to see if the author or anyone else has filmed themselves reading it. Here is a short video that I found of JK Rowling reading a passage one of my favourite books:

Here are some other authors reading their books:

Follow this link to a page on the British Museum Website.

Once there, there is a link to a power point presentation. Follow the link and open the power point. The power point gives information on how mummies were created. Not the Mum and Dad kind, we’re talking about the human bodies wrapped in linen kind!

I would like you to go through the power point a few times so that you understand what is being said on each slide. Once you are confident with what is on the slide, I would like you to present the power point to someone in your house.

You can make your own power point about mummification however I am happy for you to use the power point from the website. Make sure you have gone through the power point a few times yourself first so that you know what is coming up on each slide.

The power point can be shown on a laptop, linked to a TV or just on a phone screen for your audience.

Thursday 30th April

English

Log onto purple mash and complete the game ‘Word Hop’ making sure you are using the correct standard English to fill in the missing gaps in the sentences.

As an extension create your own sentences with missing words in and see if you quiz someone at home to get the correct answer.

Reading

Thinking back to your favourite book from Tuesday, in your jotter draw a detailed picture from your favourite part of the book. Use words from the text to label your picture e.g. if your favourite book was Harry Potter and the Philosophers stone you might draw a label to your picture of Harry and write some of the authors description of the character.

Maths - Decimals

Watch and join in with the MyMaths lesson on Decimals Number Lines Intro.

Then complete the task that has been set in MyMaths.

There have been many remarkable tomb and wall paintings discovered that were created by the Ancient Egyptians. While the paintings they created were beautiful they often told a story or gave details of what people did in that place or on that day, a bit like a comic strip.

The style the Ancient Egyptians used is very unique and recognisable.

Follow this link to look at some tomb paintings left by the Ancient Egyptians.

  • How are the paintings similar?
  • How do you know that they are all from Ancient Egypt?
  • Do you think that you would recognise another painting from Ancient Egypt?

I would like you to paint/ draw a comic strip in the style that the Ancient Egyptians used, showing me what you did today.

Maybe in 5000 years’ time people will find your drawings and use them to work out what people did in 2020 (they might be confused, thinking that the Ancient Egyptians had a short come back for a couple of months in Coldean though).

Here is a video on the BBC website. The video shows you how people lived in Ancient Egypt. It details the things that people would eat, what they used instead of money, where they lived and how they slept. I would like you to watch the video and think about how the way the Ancient Egyptians lived was different to the way that we live. In your Journal, or on a piece of paper, can you list 5 ways our lives are different to theirs.

Monday 27th April

English activity

Watch this Tadeo Jones video again:

https://www.literacyshed.com/the-egyptian-pyramids.html#

This time in your jotter write about what happened from the perspective of the mummies that get woken up when Tadeo turns the lever. You could do this as a diary entry or as though you are interviewing them.

Reading - Extension Task

In your jotter, write a newspaper report as though the Malamnder’s egg has been found on Brighton Beach, it is up to you what happened after it was found. Someone could have managed to get the egg and make a wish, or maybe they were attacked by the Malamander and went missing just leaving their shoes on the edge of the beach.

Remember to use a catchy heading, some subheadings and even draw some pictures from your newspaper report.

Maths - Fractions

Watch and join in with the MyMaths lesson on fractions as operations.

Then complete the task that has been set in MyMaths.

We already know that the Ancient Egyptians didn’t use the same numbers as we do but they also didn’t write in English. They didn’t even write using the same letters and symbols as we do. They used hieroglyphics.

Hieroglyphics are interesting because some words were written with a group of hieroglyphics, a bit like the letters that we use now, while other words could be written with its own hieroglyphic.

Follow this link to a website that gives you a hieroglyphic keyboard.

Can you write a message in hieroglyphics? If your parents are able to, they could take a photo (or screen shot) of the hieroglyphics you have written. They could then send them to one of your friends in Y4 and they can try to decode your message. If not, you can write yourself a secret message that only Ancient Egyptians (and children in our year group) can read.

Give it a go Flamingo: have a look at the hieroglyphics for x, s, c and k. Why do you think that they are similar?
