English activity

Create your own story plan about a group of animals that want something but another animals gets it, just like in ‘Catch it’ use these headings to create a plan in your jotter:

  • Setting (describe it e.g. the burning hot African savannah scattered with haggard trees)
  • Group of animals (describe them e.g. an excited group of cheeky meerkats)
  • Object that they want (describe it e.g. a giant, juicy fruit swaying in the wind)
  • Animal that steal the object (describe it e.g. the evil vulture that glided through the air like a fighter plane)
  • The chase (describe it e.g. the bunch of meerkats clambered on top of each other’s shoulders to reach out and grab the fruit from the vulture’s sharp talons)

Reading

Extension task, today write a diary entry as Violet Parma in your jotter, talk about everything that has happened since she has arrived in Eerie on Sea. Think about how she might be feeling, does she think she’s going to find out more about her missing parents, is she nervous or unsure about anything or anyone?

Maths activity

At school, we try to run a kilometre a day. If you were to run a kilometre in your garden or a room indoors where you live, how many laps would you have to do?

Ideas: Try measuring 1 lap of the garden/room with a tape measure. If you don’t have a tape measure, you could estimate the distance by measuring 1 step and counting how many steps it is. You could measure a single step with an ordinary ruler by moving the ruler along. You could also lie down a piece of sting around your garden/room and then measure it afterwards.

Now you know how far one lap of your garden or room is... How many laps would you need to run to one kilometre?

Science activity

You have done loads of research this week into the states of matter of different materials. You have learnt about the melting and boiling points of different materials as well as what happens to the particles in materials as they are heated.

Create a booklet (or use a page of your jotter) to explain the different states of matter and some of the interesting facts that you have learnt.

You can follow the link below which will show you how to create a book that you can use from a piece of A4 paper.

Thursday 26th March

English activity - Carrying on with ‘Catch it’

In your jotter write an internal dialogue for the vulture, think about how it might have been feeling when the meerkats kept trying to get the fruit back off of it. Maybe it was taking the fruit back to feed its family or maybe it just wanted to wind the meerkats up.

Watch this youtube clip from ‘Inside out’ to give you an idea about what an ‘internal dialogue’ is:

Reading

Please continue to read "Malamander", today you should read pages 68-73 (chapter: ‘Coprolites and Cuttlefish’)

Draw a picture from the chapter, you could draw Mrs Fossil doing her beachcombing or maybe the view of Seegol’s diner on the pier.

Maths activity

Watch and join in with the MyMaths lesson on finding fractions.

Then complete the task that has been set in MyMaths.

Science activity

Look at this investigation http://www.sciencekids.co.nz/gamesactivities/statematerials.html.

Why does the lid pop off when the steam is heated more?

Do your own research online to try and find out why the steam takes up more space when it is heated. Write an explanation of what is going on here in your jotter. You might want to draw some diagrams to show the particles.

If you want you can use this site for your research: https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zkgg87h/articles/zsgwwxs

Wednesday 25th March

English activity

Watch ‘Catch it’ again to remind yourself of the story https://www.literacyshed.com/catchit.html

This time, in your jotter, write a conversation between the different meerkats when they are trying to get the fruit off of the vulture.

You can watch this BBC Bitesize video to remind you how to punctuate speech.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/clips/zvftsbk

Reading activity

Please continue to read "Malamander", today you should read pages 61-67 (chapter: ‘In which a book is dispensed’)

Imagine you are the author and in your jotter write out what you think should happen in the next chapter of Malamnder. Will Violet and Herbie see the malamander, will they get caught by Mr Mollusc, could they bump into boat hook man?

Maths activity

Watch and join in with the MyMaths lesson on simple equivalent fractions.

Then complete the task that has been set in MyMaths.

Science activity

Watch the bbc clip and read the information on the website here https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zkgg87h/articles/zydxmnb.

What is the most common material that you will have seen evaporating and condensing? Water!

This is because water’s boiling point is 100°C which is a temperature that can be reached easily.

In comparison aluminium melts at 660°C. Aluminium evaporates at 2460°c. This is why an aluminium can is a solid (on a normal day the temperature will never be above 660°C let alone 2460°C).

Search online and find 5 materials that have boiling points close to 100°C.

Which material has the closest boiling point to 100°C that you can find, other than water?

Tuesday 24th March

English activity

Watch ‘Catch it’ https://www.literacyshed.com/catchit.html

In your jotter, re-tell the story from the Meerkat’s point of view.

Remember to use lots of description e.g. the juicy, round fruit hung from the dry, crispy branch of the tree that lay in the middle of the deserted savannah.

Reading

Please continue to read "Malamander", today you should read pages 55-60 (chapter: ‘The Eerie Book Dispensary’)

Discuss these questions or write them out with the answers in your jotter:

  • What do you think of Sebastian Eels, is he a good character or a bad character? Explain why.
  • Would you like the Mermonkey to choose a book for you? What kind of book do you think it would be and why?

Maths activity

Every week there will be a Battle of the Bands between Emerald and Jade class on Times Tables Rock Stars. Let’s see which class has what it takes to be the best! We’ll post the winning class on here next week on Monday!

Watch and join in with the MyMaths lesson on introducing equivalent fractions.

Then complete the homework task that has been set in MyMaths.

Science activity

Watch the BBC Bitesize clip and read the information on the website here https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zkgg87h/articles/z9ck9qt.

Not all solids melt when they are heated, some burn.

Create a list of 10 different solids that melt when they are heated e.g. ice, butter.

Put those solids in a list.

Predict which ones you think melt at the highest temperature and which melt at a lower temperature?

Research online to find out the melting point of each of the solids in your list. Were you correct about which materials melt at the highest temperature?

Then, take a look at this investigation http://www.sciencekids.co.nz/gamesactivities/meltingpoints.html

Write down anything that surprised you about the results of this experiment.

Monday 23rd March

English activity - Character Profile

At the moment our topic is ‘Wild and Wondrous

Create your own character profile and picture in your jotter for a rainforest adventurer/explorer using these subheadings:

Name:

Age:

Likes:

Dislikes:

Biggest adventure yet:

Reading

Please also continue to read Malamander. Today you should read pages 49-55 (chapter ‘A coin for the Mermonkey’)

Write your answers to these questions:

  • Why were Herbie and Violet having to be sneaky when they were looking in room 407?
  • How do you think Violet felt when they didn’t find any clues about her missing parents in the room, explain your answer.
  • Draw a picture of what you think the mermonkey card around Violets neck looks like.

Maths activity - Fractions of amounts.

Watch and join in with the MyMaths lesson on 'modelling fractions of amounts'

Now complete the online homework here.

Challenge: As an extension task you could draw out some diagrams showing fractions of different amounts of thing around the house e.g. in your wardrobe 1/3 of the clothes are blue or 2/5 of the pencils in the pencil pot are yellow.

Science activity

You will find this task as a 2do in your Purple Mash account

https://www.purplemash.com/#app/pup/solidsliquidsgases

Watch the video then create your own poster explaining what a solid, liquid and gas is. You could give some examples of different ones around your house.

An alternative task/extension task is to create a fact box in your jotter and fill it with as much as you can remember – this could include illustrations too.
