Year 6

FRIDAY 8th May

Today is May Bank Holiday. We have this holiday to celebrate May Day. It is an ancient festival of Spring and a current traditional spring holiday across Europe. Dances, singing, and cake are usually part of the festivities.

This year many people will be celebrating the anniversary of the ending of World War 2 in Europe. It ended 75 years ago today, on 8th May 1945.

Have a lovely weekend.

Thursday 7th May

English Activity

An idiom is a common word or phrase which means something different from its literal meaning but can be understood because of its popular use:

e.g. Beat around the bush means to avoid saying what you mean.

To bite the bullet means to get something over and done with.

Below is a list of idioms about doors. Can you work out what they mean? Write your answers in your jotter.

  • as one door closes, another opens
  • at death’s door
  • behind closed doors
  • through the back door
  • dead as a doornail
  • foot in the door
  • keep the wolf from the door
  • knocking on heaven’s door
  • leave the door open
  • show somebody the door
  • slam the door in somebody’s face

Maths Activity

Today you need to watch Week 1, Lesson 3 ‘Introducing the ratio symbol’ and then click on ‘Get the Activity’ (https://wrm-13b48.kxcdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/homelearning/year-6/Y6-Spring-Block-6-WO3-Introducing-the-ratio-symbol-2019.pdf).

Work your way through the questions, copying parts of the questions if you need to into your jotter.

We have also assigned you an alternative on MyMaths if you are finding it tricky to copy out the worksheet. You may find it more of a challenge as it does not match perfectly with the learning from the video. https://app.mymaths.co.uk/1686-homework/ratio-dividing-1

History Activity

You will find this task in your 2Dos on Purple Mash

Read these sections on the Mayans.

  • Children
  • Food

Use these as subheadings in your jotter and make notes as you read about the key information.

Wednesday 6th May

Art activity

You will have seen lots of rainbows used as symbols of thanks recently.

Other artists have used the symbol too. Look at these illustrations by Quentin Blake and see if you can think of other ways that a rainbow could be used.

You might want to draw this digitally on Purple Mash or colour or paint your designs.

Non-digital version can be photographed and emailed to the office office@coldean.brighton-hove.sch.uk. We will then choose some to send to the AMEX Stadium to display at their Testing Centre.

Music activity

On Purple Mash, have a go at building a Popstar portrait.

Create an artist, a look, a band and then tell me all about them. What kind of music do they play? Are they famous? Be creative, invent new musical styles. Or keep it simple and just base it on the music you like. Enjoy. I look forward to seeing your creations.

You can also have a go at learning about the history of Hip Hop and having a go at being a DJ here...

https://www.google.com/doodles/44th-anniversary-of-the-birth-of-hip-hop

There are instructions to talk you through it, enjoy.

Computing activity

This week we're going to make our own database! There's lots to do so you might want to finish it next week.

Click here for the lesson slides (you might want to download them so that you can view the slides whilst accessing Purple Mash.)

Tuesday 5th May

English Activity

This follows on from yesterday’s focus.

Doors are not only exciting for what may lie behind them, they can be designed to invite you into their world. A few years ago, a derelict area of Funchal in Madeira was transformed by local artists who decided to bring the dead doors to life.

Click on this to see some examples.

Have a go at drawing, painting or creating your own door in your jotter. What design would you choose? What would it represent?

Maths Activity

Today you need to watch Week 1, Lesson 2 ‘Ratio and Fractions’ and then click on ‘Get the Activity’ (https://wrm-13b48.kxcdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/homelearning/year-6/Y6-Spring-Block-6-WO2-Ratio-and-fractions-2019.pdf).

Work your way through the questions, copying parts of the questions if you need to into your jotter.

We have also assigned you an alternative on MyMaths if you are finding it tricky to copy out the worksheet. You may find the work more challenging as it does not match perfectly with the learning from the video. https://app.mymaths.co.uk/5857-homework/modelling-ratio

Geography Activity

The Mayan civilization was based in Central America as you know. Central America is in a different time zone to us.

Time in countries to the east of the Prime Meridian is always in front of that in the UK.

Time in countries to the west of the Prime Meridian is always behind that of the UK.

Central America is always behind us. Find out more here.

Watch the clip, read the information and test your knowledge at the end.

Monday 4th May

English Activity

Have you ever looked at a door and wondered what might be on the other side? Where may it lead? What may be hiding within?

At first glance, a door is just a piece of wood, glass or metal that is opened and closed so that people can get in and out of a room, a vehicle or a space. But in the hands of a writer, a door represents a world of possibility, a world where things are not only hidden but often closed off and restricted. Watch this clip

Brainstorm a list of ideas for what might be behind the door. Let your imagination run wild as there is no wrong answer. Once you have your list, have a go at writing a poem, using the repeating opener:

I opened the magical door and saw …

Here’s an example to help you get going:

I opened the magical door and saw shadows dancing.

I opened the magical door and saw a rainbow leading to another world.

I opened the magical door and saw people crying.

I opened the magical door and saw a magical fairground flooded in lights.

Once you have got your ideas, go back and see if you can add to them. You could add more description or bring the thing to life through action, e.g. I opened the magical door and saw a shoal of hungry shadows, tangoing through busy streets.

Maths Activity

This week we are going to use the White Rose videos for our maths learning. We will start with Week 1, Lesson 1 – ‘Using Ratio Language’ from this link https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-6/

Watch the video and then click on ‘Get the Activity’ (https://wrm-13b48.kxcdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/homelearning/year-6/Y6-Spring-Block-6-WO1-Using-ratio-language-2019.pdf )

This will take you to a worksheet.

All you need to do is write down the answers to the questions. If the question requires you to draw part of the question (it does this on question 2 and 8), then do your best to draw the part you need to. If a question requires you to use equipment you don’t have (possibly question 4), then you may leave that question.

We have also assigned you an alternative on MyMaths if you are finding it tricky to copy out the worksheet. You may find it more challenging as it does not match perfectly with the learning from the video. https://app.mymaths.co.uk/158-homework/ratio-introduction

Science Activity - What are the stages of a plant’s life cycle

Plants are able to reproduce in two different ways - sexual reproduction and asexual reproduction.

Sexual reproduction involves pollen from one flower fertilising the egg of another to produce a seed.

Only one parent is needed in asexual reproduction and the offspring are exact copies.

Use this BBC Bitesize link.

Watch the video, read the information and complete the fill in the gaps activity at the end. This links to our learning from last term.
