Year 6

Friday 24th April

English Activity

Your task today is to write your persuasive leaflet, flyer or advert to convince people to visit Chichen Itza. Use your notes from yesterday. An example of what this might look like is here. Include a passive sentence.

Maths Activity - record the questions and answers into your jotter.

Solve these calculations using short division:

  1. 246.6 ÷ 4
  2. 99.12 ÷ 12
  3. 493.2 ÷ 24

For these next few questions you will need to work out the mean. Remember – the mean is the total of the numbers divided by how many numbers there are.

1. Temperature Graph

This graph shows the lowest-recorded temperature from Monday-Friday last week.

Calculate the mean of this set of data for the lowest-recorded temperature last week from Monday-Friday.

2. Sprint times

Gemma has been recording her sprint times over her last four races. Here are her times in seconds:

What is her mean speed for these four races?

Challenge - Gemma has one more race left today. She says that to improve her mean she will have to race faster than 14.6 seconds. Explain why she is correct.

3. Howler-throw distances

Calculate the mean for how far Clara threw her howler over these five attempts.

4. Challenge Question

Jamie recorded his race data over 5 races and worked out his mean time was 14.1 seconds. Here are the results for the first 4 of his races.

15.2,   13.7,   14.9,   14.1

What was the result of the 5th race?

RE/PSHE Activity

Thursday 23rd April

English Activity

Check out the ruins of the ancient Mayan City of Chichen Itza at http://chichenitzaruins.org/aerial-panorama/.

Use the Internet and make some notes about the city in your jotter. You will use this to create a persuasive leaflet or advert about the place as a holiday destination tomorrow. These websites will help you with that:

http://justfunfacts.com/interesting-facts-about-chichen-itza/

http://www.fun-facts.org.uk/wonders_of_world/chichen-itza.htm

These headings may be useful:

  • What is Chichen Itza?
  • Where is Chichen Itza?
  • Who built Chichen Itza?
  • When was Chichen Itza built?
  • What does Chichen Itza mean?
  • What is there?
  • Did you know?

Maths Activity - record the questions and answers into your jotter.

  1. A farmer is packing eggs. Each box holds six eggs. The farmer has 2,468 eggs to pack. How many boxes does the farmer need?
  2. There are 728 children and 12 adults going on a school trip on coaches. Each coach seats 25 people. How many more children could come on the trip without needing to book another coach?
  3. Tulips are gathered in bunches of 24. Two fields have 4712 flowers growing in each. How many full bunches of tulips will the two fields produce together?
  4. A packet contains 5 kilograms of guinea pig food. Remi’s guinea pig has to eat a minimum of 32 grams of food each day. How many days will the packet last for?
  5. 427 children visit a castle. They go in groups of 15 apart from one group which has less than 15. Every group of children has one adult with them.

How many groups of 15 go?

How many children are in the group with less than 15?

How many adults will need to go?

Challenge:

There are 453 children/adults going on a school trip. One of the coaches is not full – it only has 29 adults/children sat on it with seats left over.

The maximum seater coach available is 53 which costs £168. These coaches were used for most of the children/adults. The minimum seater coach available is 34 which costs £119. This was the one coach that was used which was not full.

How many coaches are needed to get everyone on the trip?

How much did the coaches cost in total?

History Activity

You will find the "Maya Slideshow" task in your 2Dos on Purple Mash.

Read Entertainment section on the Mayans. Use this as a subheading in your jotter and make notes as you read about the key information.

An alternative task/extension task is try and keep a ball up in the air without using your hands or feet! Can you do it like a Mayan Pok-A-Tok sports warrior?

Wednesday 22nd April

Art activity

Take a look at this website. https://www.culturestreet.org.uk/activities.php

It has loads of really good art stuff on, but look particularly at the drawing figures activity, as this is something we were going to do together in class, based on Leonardo da Vinci's drawings.

https://www.culturestreet.org.uk/activities/figureitout/index.php?id=8

Keep your work to share when we are all back together.

Keep on drawing!

Computing activity

This half term we will be exploring databases - how they work and how to search them to find exactly what information we are looking for.

Click here for the lesson slides (you might want to download them so that you can view the slides whilst accessing Purple Mash.)

There are two 2Do quizzes set today. You will need to go through the lesson slides before you attempt the quizzes!

Music activity

This week's music learning is about melody. Melody is the tune of a song.
Check out your 2Dos on Purple Mash and click on "2Do: Melody"
There's an example melody there. Notice that the spaces in the grid help the tune to sound right. Can you begin again and copy the melody of a simple song or nursery rhyme?
Bells and Chimes work well. Maybe someone else at home could help you?
Challenge: Can you add some drums?

Tuesday 21st April

English Activity

Passive sentence structures. Use this BBC Bitesize link:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zwwp8mn/articles/zsx2b82

Watch the video, complete the fill in the gaps activity under that, then finally take the quiz at the bottom.

Maths Activity – record the questions and answers into your jotter:

Solve these calculations using either short division or through flexible partitioning:

A.) 1131 ÷ 15

B.) 1024 ÷ 22

C.) 3552 ÷ 26

D.) 8051 ÷ 78

E.) 1425 ÷ 45

Challenges

What could the missing numbers be?

Use this first calculation to solve the second two calculations:

14 x 97 = 1358

1372 ÷ 14 = _________

13580 ÷ 97 = _________

An alternative/further task can be found on PurpleMash https://www.purplemash.com/#app/pup/maths_activities_Y6_long_division

Geography Activity

The Central Maya area consisted of the rain forests of central Guatemala, and included the sites of Palenque and Tikal. The water cycle plays and important part in this climate. Create your own water cycle today. Follow the instructions below.

You will need:

  • a large metal or plastic bowl
  • a jug or bottle
  • a sheet of clear plastic wrap like cling film
  • a dry ceramic mug (like a coffee mug)
  • a long piece of string or large rubber band
  • water

Now do this:

  1. Put the bowl in a sunny place outside or near a window sill.
  2. Using the jug or bottle, pour water into the bowl until it is about ¼ full.
  3. Place the mug in the centre of the bowl. Be careful not to splash any water into it.
  4. Cover the top of the bowl tightly with the plastic wrap.
  5. Tie the string around the bowl to hold the plastic wrap in place.
  6. Watch the bowl to see what happens.

If you can, take a photo and send it to office@coldean.brighton-hove.sch.uk for the attention of Miss Armstead/Mr Conboy and Mrs Andrews will forward it on to us.

Alternatively or as an extension use this Bitesize link:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zkgg87h/articles/z3wpp39 Watch the video and complete the task.

Science Activity

Summer in Year 6 is our change to study the people of another ancient civilisation. This term it is the ancient Mayans.

The ancient Maya civilization existed in present-day Mexico and Central America from 2600 BC until the Spanish arrived in the 16th century. The Maya made important discoveries in the areas of science and cosmology which enabled them to create a calendar system that was more accurate than the one we use today. They were gifted designers and architects who built grand structures including royal residences, observatories, pyramids, straight roads, and canals. The Maya also invented elastic and immense underground water reservoirs for the dry seasons.

You read about pyramids in a history task before Easter. Find something to build one with today – lego, sugar cubes, books. Remember, they are a slightly different shape to the Ancient Egyptian ones.

Alternatively, you could draw one in your jotter. Here is a link to a You Tube video you can follow to help with this – pause it as you go along to draw alongside the demonstrator.
